On Friday May 20th, the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL), in conjunction with Play Rugby USA, will host the 2nd Annual PSAL High school rugby 7s championship. 12 teams from 8 schools will work their way towards the championship tournament by competing in the Olympic version of the worlds 2nd most popular sport, under “Friday night lights” tournaments every week from April 29th.
Each team will receive points depending upon their placing in each weekly tournament with the championship winning team collecting the most points from the four tournaments and being recognized as the best in New York at the championship round on May 20th.
The tournament will include 12 teams with over 150 Male and Female student athletes. Mark Griffin and the PlayRugby Team will be on hand plus various guest players from the USA Women's rugby world cup team.
The event will take place on Friday 20th May 5th with the Welcome and Opening Ceremony at 4:45pm, Pool Matches kick off at 5pm, the Championship Final for Girls at 7:20pm and for Boys 7:40pm, and finished off with the Awards Ceremony at 8pm

The PSAL and Play Rugby USA teamed up to offer students in the biggest school system in North America the opportunity to play the fastest growing sport in the US. Rugby 7s is a sport with a very long history and tradition of sportsmanship, discipline and camaraderie with faced paced high scoring action, where the team that works together the best usually comes out on top. An alternative to mainstream American sports, rugby 7s has been offering students through the PSAL, unbelievable conditioning and wellness benefits while learning about and becoming part of the truly global community of rugby players. One Student from the PSAL, who exhibits the rugby values the best, will receive a 6 week scholarship to the number 1 ranked rugby playing country in the world – New Zealand, to study and hone their rugby skills from elite professional coaches.
