The Brazil Women´s Team are a rising star in the South American game. As they are preppering for the IRB Women’s Sevens Series, I talked to Edna Santini and Luiza Campos, two promising players representing Brazil in the series.
ARL: How are Brazil Women's Team getting ready for upcoming IRB series competitions?
EDNA: Each series have a goal. We are building up the strengths and fixing weaknesses. If the individual skills are going well than Team will be fine. Also, the coaches are doing a great job.
LUIZA: The Team is working together in São Paulo. Training day by day to know each one of the players , focusing to grow individual skills and consolidate the Brazilian´s Game.
Edna Santini
ARL: What are the differences between Brazil Women's Team and the principal opponents from Oceania?
LUIZA: I think that the principal difference is in the physical body composition because the athletes of the other teams have come from a rugby environment since being children. This is just happening in Brazil.
EDNA: In my opinion the South American rugby must grow in the future. If the countries does the work to grow the children bases, so the rugby will grow and greater the play will be.
Luiza Campos
ARL: What's is the message about the development of womens rugby you like to share?
EDNA: Everyone is welcome to rugby and it offers so much to you. It is more than a colour uniform or playing for a club. You must be a true player on and off the field too.
LUIZA: Girls, rugby has a lot to teach to you. Now you are in a circle, in a great family and they will support you everytime. Rugby is a life style.
ARL: Thank you and I wish good luck in the series!

Courtesy of Dallen Stanford Rugby Showdown announces new ticket prices and kick-off time!
The Rugby Showdown has released a new ticket pricing structure and later kick-off time to ensure that the rugby community in Southern California can experience the exciting fixture on April 13th.
The South African Golden Lions from Johannesburg, who took part in the 2012 Super 15 Rugby competition, will take on the North American All Stars at Cal State Fullerton. The match is now set to kick-off at 7.30 p.m. Pacific Time at Titan Stadium on Saturday April 13th.
The evening kick-off will certainly help boost attendance figures with several rugby teams in the region competing in the various playoff competitions in Southern California.
“This is indeed excellent news for our match against the Lions. Having a large crowd supporting us will definitely add to the excitement of this clash,” said flanker Todd Clever, the North American All Stars captain.
Another element that will aid this cause is the new ticket prices released by the Rugby Showdown:
Youth $5, Students $10, General Seating $25 and Preferred Seating $35.
For more information and to purchase tickets click here!
The April 13th event will see a festival atmosphere with plenty of action planned for inside and outside Titan Stadium on the beautiful Cal State Fullerton campus.
Several local rugby teams are set to move their playoff matches to this venue, with youth, college, club and old boys fixtures on the schedule. Tournament organizers will be announcing news of the live entertainment in the coming weeks, including a rugby banquet, beer garden and giveaways.
In other news: USA Eagles Head Coach, Mike Tolkin, who will coach the North American All Stars - has released three names of his squad that will face the Golden Lions.
These players include Andrew Suniula, Shaun Davies and Graham Harriman.
“Andrew is a hard running veteran centre who brings leadership to the squad. Shaun is a dynamic and feisty young player who got his first taste of international rugby last summer. Graham broke into the Eagles this fall after a promising campaign in the Americas Rugby Championship (ARC). He is a good technical lock who has a bright future,” said Tolkin.
Andrew Suniula ( Credit: www.rugbyphoto.com / Gary Coldwells )
Suniula (centre) – who comes from a strong rugby background with Eagle brothers Roland and Shalom – has been capped 15 times for the USA Eagles, and played at the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. The powerful center is a great addition for the team, providing excellent go-forward ball, and is solid on defense.
Davies (scrum half) – the All-American from Brigham Young University (BYU) earned his first cap for the USA Eagles last year, and is an up and coming talent in the number 9 jersey.
Harriman (lock) – played for the USA Selects in 2012 at the ARC, and has also attended the Sharks Academy in Durban, South Africa. Harriman currently plays for the Chicago Griffins with teammate Andrew Suniula.
“This game brings a great competitive opportunity for our HP (High Performance) players to be involved in during their domestic season. It also gives the fans an opportunity to watch a great professional organization in their back yard. It will be a brilliant evening, “ enthused Tolkin.
For the first Spotlight podcast of 2013, I had the pleasure to chat with Mollie McCarthy, the new head coach for the Mens and Womens rugby programs at Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL.
Mollie McCarthy
We chat about Mollie's early playing days and her extensive coach career which included 4 years as the coach development manager with USA Rugby. We also get an insight into her move to Alabama and what her future plans are for the development of college rugby there.
This time last year, Coach Burke of the Oakland Warthogs and I rucked over an idea to get OLD Rugby players to donate unused/retired gear to YOUNG Rugby players.
The response last from last year's Rugby Santa forced my business partner to ask me to stop having stuff sent to the office. We literally couldn't get down our hall.
Let's do that again, yes?
After the Silly Season, "The Girl" at YourScrumHalfConnection.com came up with TRY Donation Program: Tomorrow's Rugby Youth. Madak.com designs gave us a logo, and BOOM, we were in business. If you have old gear, please contact Kevin at RuckingInsurance.com for a mailing address.
If you're a youth program in need of gear, again contact Kevin.

As part of a new feature on a rugby life, I am proud to introduce an insight into rugby fashion brought to you by Bakline. Kia ora from the future
With the culmination of the Rugby World Cup ending tomorrow, the 2011 year has proven to be a noteworthy one for rugby fashion. The battles waged on the pitch during the tournament began transcending across borders, court rooms and retail outlets before the event even started. While fans of the game watch replays on Rugby Dump to pass time at the office, our time at Bakline was busy watching the trends of the insight and controversy within the fashion world of rugby.
To kickstart the year, it was announced that a people's champion, Jim Carlberg of Rugby America, Ltd. in a David vs. Goliath scenario fought the Ralph Lauren Company in it's defense to keep the word "Rugby" out of Ralph Lauren's greedy portfolio of copyrights. Imagine, Ralph Lauren wanted to put a stop to all the brands out there from using "rugby" on their apparel. The chutzpah. Thankfully, a level-headed Judge in the USA thought RL's claim to be whack and gave the six year legal battle victory to Mr. Carlberg. Thank him if see him about.
Springboks RWC 2011 Jersey
The next battle waged, well several, was in South Africa. The beloved Springbok is the epitome of pride for many in South Africa. Although the icon was in existence long before the Apartheid went into existence, the current government wants to make all national teams consistent with the Protea and decided to move the Springbok emblem from the left chest. The jersey maker, Canterbury has their logo front and center - but the most important icon to rugby fans was cast to the sleeve during the tournament. To add further insult to the furor was a legislative member of the ANC government called on his peers and country men to boycott wearing the jersey for its made in China and not locally by the fabric mills within SA. Tough battle we say.
A similar story of politics and rugby fashion happened in New Zealand when MP Clare Curran wore a Highlanders jersey in session and was asked to leave for breaching dress code conduct. Her reason was highlighting the protest of the change in kit colors from blue and yellow to lime green. The passion!
England 7s National Team
Speaking of colors, who can forget England's "tiger" sevens kit or the debacle surrounding the English alternate "all black" kit. This, we think, is one of the biggest fashion stories of 2011. When England and Nike announced the all black kit, fans across the world on both sides criticized the marketing move as both offensive and flattering to the New Zealand All Blacks. Should we remind our readers that New Zealand's alternate kit is completely all white and Wales got in on the fun too with a near complete, all black away kit as well. It was probably just a fashion conspiracy to get the English to look like All Blacks supporters!
Which leads us to the tournament hosts. Adidas and retailers in New Zealand put the much anticipated All Black jersey up for sale at rather astronomical prices. In the home nation, the jersey asking price hovered around $220 NZ dollars (about $180 US) and online with World Rugby Shop for $89 US. This created huge uproar from fans as this price fluctuation showed the cracks in the marketing from Adidas. Obviously, New Zealand has a captured audience on an island and when you mix the pinnacle of rugby competitions in the land of the best team, you have a goldmine to suck dry. Some retailers bent on their profits to appeal to the fans but nevertheless - the support behind the All Blacks is immense and reports show the jersey is selling better than expected.
Oh, and thought that fancy new All Blacks jersey was indestructible? This one is for you ladies.

New York City's popular Kiwi hang out, Nelson Blue, invites you to celebrate two of the country’s most iconic exports on Saturday, October 1st; Sauvignon Blanc and rugby. Marking the release of their 2010 Sauvignon Blanc, The Infamous Goose welcomes the triumphant return of their home team the All Blacks to the Rugby World Cup with a pre-game reception at New York City’s Nelson Blue Bar & Grill co-hosted by the Kiwi Club of New York.
Guests will be invited to complimentary samples of The Infamous Goose 2010 Sauvignon Blanc and learn “The Haka” – a traditional dance of New Zealand’s native Māori made famous worldwide by their rugby team. Cheer New Zealand’s All Blacks, as they take on the Canadian Canucks and toast to New Zealand rugby icons Captain Richie McCaw, Fly-half Dan Carter and wunderkind Sonny Bill Williams as they ruck and maul their way to glory in the North Island city of Wellington at 10:30pm EST.
Ireland vs USa in Santa Clara. Credit: Tony Avelar / Associated Press
The countdown to the Ireland v USA's match at the 2011 Rugby World Cup is almost over, as both teams get ready to kick of at 6pm NZST (2am EST) in New Plymouth.
This match is highly anticipated here, and even with the odds stacked against the Eagles, many are wondering if we could see an upset for the Irish.
For the Eagles, with the match taking place on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and former Irish head coach Eddie O'Sullivan now at the helm, this game is going to be an emotional one. Captain Todd Clever and O'Sullivan have already acknowledge this in interviews and to their credit, have sounded very calm and collected. Channeling this emotion into motivation is key to their success. O'Sullivan knows the lay of the Irish land to a certain extent and exploiting that can only benefit the US. Other key factors is for the Eagles to settle down into the game early, while maintaining the physically pressure for the full 80 minutes (US should take some inspiration from the Romanians and Japanese).
A few folks have been asking me what my Rugby World Cup predictions are for this year and thought it was about time to share them with you all!
I will talk more about game predictions in a future post or you can get a sneak peak of what I am thinking by joining the ARL Rugby World Cup prediction game on SuperBru (Pool name: a rugby life, Pool code: seartick).

Letter to the Editor: Reaction to the Women's rugby - or lack of it - on TV for CRC 7s
This arrived in my in box in response to the lack of TV coverage on NBC during the USA Sevens Collegiate Rugby Championship earlier this month. If you feel the same, or differently, drop a line at RugbyBuzz@gmail.com and get the dialog going. The question NBC asks, though, is there an audience for women’s rugby? The note below would indicate yes.
Thank you for being one of the very few people to even pay attention to the fact that women competed in the CRC, and thank you too for not belittling their participation. I love Sevens. I certainly loved watching the men’s games, and the coverage of those games was commendable. But it’s regrettable, offensive, inexcusable, unjustifiable, patronizing, ridiculous, passively misogynistic, and (fill in your own various negatives here) that not only was the women’s competition barely mentioned, but there was zero coverage of it. We didn’t get to see it broadcast on TV and, to add insult, can’t even watch it on universalsports.com. Other than a couple highlight moments that can be found if one digs hard enough, it appears that, as far as Universal/NBC is concerned, there was no women’s competition. The biggest attention paid on-air was to rub salt in the wound by mentioning the inequitable GoDaddy scholarships — $20k to the men, $5k to the women. I’d like to believe we were slowly but at least surely evolving past the “oh, they’re just playing the girls’ version; girls can’t really play sports; no one cares or wants to watch them; men play the real game” mindset, but the complete lack of coverage combined with that discrepancy in scholarship rewards pretty much belies any hope of doing so. My mother’s and grandmother’s generations probably would have been less excited about Title IX if they’d known how little things would progress in the four decades since.
I understand that you were not personally responsible for Universal’s/NBC’s error, and in fact you’re to be applauded for not blindly following their lead in ignoring the women altogether. But yours was the address I managed to find when trying to figure out to whom I could send this complaint, so I’m afraid you “won” by default. Feel free to pass the message along to more appropriate recipients if you think there’s the slightest hope it would ever actually make a difference.
And now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, I guess I’ll go don pearls, pumps, and hoopskirt and find something appropriately estrogen-acceptable and nonathletic to do. (I suppose if I wanted to preserve any chance of this viewpoint being paid attention, I should pretend I’m male, but I just can’t bring myself to do it.)
Thank you for your time and for your respectful articles.
