The Mount Beats Lord Fairfax in first NSCRO Spring Playoff Match

Special report by Steve Cohen, NSCRO President

The NSCRO spring playoffs have begun. The weather cooperated in Middletown, VA - the home of Lord Fairfax Community College - which stands at the gateway to Skyline Drive leading to the Blue Ridge Mountains. After the winter we've had in the Mid-Atlantic area, cooperation is no rain or snow and above freezing temperature. It was a dry day with temperature in the low 40s.  It was a 225 mile drive for me from Medford, NJ to attend this match.
I was there to support the efforts of Aaron Painter and Stuart Freakly, coaches of the Lord Fairfax CC rugby club, who in less than 3 years have built a fine rugby team and created a strong foundation for the future at a community college. Very few rugby clubs exist at community colleges due to the challenges of a very non-traditional student population.

Lord Fairfax CC, the Cardinals Collegiate Conference Champion, was scheduled to host the Mount St. Mary's University, the Potomac Collegiate Conference Champion, from nearby Emmitsburg, Maryland in a NSCRO Mid-Atlantic South Region Qualifier. The winner would qualify for the MAS Region Championship in Jacksonville, Florida on March 29-30 hosted by the University of North Florida RFC.
St. Marys Team Photo (Credit: NSCRO)

Jay Myles, the Mount's Head Coach was concerned about match readiness for his players. Both teams have had a rough time preparing due to the unusually harsh winter conditions making outdoor pre-playoff matches impossible.

The match started and the Mount went to work right away with strong mauling and ball control when center Edmund Piper made a line break for 30m and passed to winger Brady Parson to put his club up 5-0 with just 4 minutes gone. About 10 minutes later, second rower David Harrison scored from a driving maul off a lineout. Then 2 minutes after this score, another driving maul by The Mount freed scrumhalf Sean Hartig for a fine 30m run and with his conversion, the Mount was off to a quick 17-0 lead. Tyler Long broke the Mount's defense and scored and with the conversion Chance Ramey slotted the conversion, it was 17-7. However, the Mount answered with 3 more first half tries taking a solid 32-7 halftime lead. The second half found Lord Fairfax picking up the pace and mounted an attack deep into the Mount's end when Renber Hernandez broke through the defense for a try just 3 minutes into the half. Then only 5 minutes later Derrick Hayes found a gap in the normally stingy Mount defense for a try and all of a sudden the score was 32-17. With the momentum favoring Lord Fairfax, the Mount woke up and began to assert themselves. They add 3 tries in the final 20 minutes to pull away with a 49-17 win when referee Simon Smith's final whistle sounded.

The MJAAs will be back in the JWRT following their unsuccessful IRB Junior World Championship campaign this year. The MJAAs lost all five of their matches in France, including a 109-0 loss to eventual champion England. As the host country of the JWRT in 2012, the MJAAs captured the title of champions with a 37-33 win against Japan in the Final at Murray Rugby Park Stadium.

The large number of players in attendance will allow the MJAA coaching staff to test the candidates with game-type scenarios, during which rugby skill and rugby IQ will be on display as players are evaluated on technical proficiency, skill and performance.

Amongst the players invited were 7 NSCRO players:
Daniel Zupin, Western New England University
Codi Jones, Cal Maritime Academy,
Ky Young, New England College,
Thomas Robles, Santa Rosa JC,
Shane Dempsey, Salve Regina University
James Tayson, New England College
Valdemar Lee-Lo, Sierra Collegiate

As part of NSCRO's support of the growth and development of Small College rugby, NSCRO sent each player $100 to help offset the $150 camp fee charged by USA Rugby.

On a roll, UT claim Easter 7s title

The Texas Rugby team continued their preparation for the CRC by winning the Easter 7s in Dallas this past weekend.

The format of the Easter 7s changed on a few occasions from round robin scrimmages between a few Texas collegiate programs, to a full tournament, then something in-between when several teams failed to arrive on Saturday morning. Credit to the organizers – the Dallas Reds – who then were able to piece together a mini-tournament between the University of Texas (two sides), Texas Tech, North Texas, the Dallas Reds and the Arlington Mavericks.

For the Longhorns it was another fantastic opportunity to gain valuable match practice with a squad of 17 players. Together the two teams went 6-1, with coaches Jacob Liberman and Julien du Castel able to interchange players between the sides.

UT Longhorns take the Fiesta 7s

The Texas Rugby team won the Fiesta Sevens tournament in Alamo City this past weekend amid dry and dusty conditions.

The Longhorns defeated UTSA 28-14 in an excellent final, and produced some exciting rugby throughout the day. Several players stood-out for the UT team, and this was a fantastic opportunity for the young side to have valuable match practice ahead of the CRC 7s tournament.

Julien du Castel (Assistant Coach) was on hand to help the Horns raise the trophy: “This type of tournament is really valuable for our development. We were able to get a lot of our young players good amounts of game time against physical and athletic teams who played some different styles of play. And I thought the boys played very well, applying a lot of defensive pressure and working our offensive pattern.”

Match Report: University of Oklahoma 3 - 41 Arkansas State

Courtesy of Tyson Meek, Oklahoma Rugby

Number 4 ranked Arkansas State was too much for the Sooners Saturday March 26th, ultimately prevailing 41 – 3. The game was much closer than the score line reads and was still a contest until the Sooners Captain and Number 10 Arrynn Wilkinson was yellow carded in the 65th minute for a dangerous tackle.  Arkansas State took advantage of their opportunity with the Sooner playmaker off the field and ran in four trys in short order while Wilkinson was in the bin.

OU’s set piece continues to struggle with the pressure exerted by its College Premier Division opponents.  Arkansas State benefited early from an Oklahoma miscue at the second scrum of the game on the OU 5 meter line.  The Oklahoma backrow allowed the ball to escape the scrum between the number 6 and number 8 while OU scrumhalf Mike Diver was out of position; the Arkansas State halfback Yoshiyasu Abe took advantage of the mistake scooped the ball up and scored the easiest try of his career.  Pat Sullivan converted for the extras.

A Brief History of The M.I.T. Rugby Football Club

Today, I got this gem of USA rugby history from one of my old clubs, MIT RFC, courtesy of rugby alum, Art Morales.   Its an article, written about 15 years ago, which recently got re-discovered, and I thought be great to share.  Enjoy!
 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A Brief History of The M.I.T. Rugby Football Club

Rugby football was being played at M.I.T. as early as 1882 according to school records. It became increasingly popular during the early 1900's when gridiron football was temporarily banned at the school.  The club ceased to exist during the Second World War only to be resurrected in 1949, making it the oldest club in the New England Rugby Football Union (NERFU) and one of the oldest in the United States. In fact, M.I.T. RFC was the moving force in the establishment of NERFU itself. With the leadership of Prof. Joe Walsh and Dr. Bob Lawrence (M.I.T. Ph.D. '57), NERFU has become one of the strongest sub-unions in the United States.

Several clubs which are now regional or national powers are children or grandchildren of the M.I.T. RFC By the late 1950's, rugby at M.I.T. had become so popular and had retained so many alumni that the decision was made to restrict M.I.T. RFC membership to current M.I.T. students. Because of this action, a number of M.I.T. alumni started the Boston RFC in 1960, the first club team established in New England. Boston RFC in turn, became perennial NERFU champions and one of the premier teams in the country.

An M.I.T. RFC alumnus of the class of 1966, known throughout USA Rugby solely as The Troll (due to his ability and inclination to live at the bottom of scrums) has been a leader in the development of rugby in the Pacific North-West coast with the formation of the Portland (Ore.) Jesters and their rivals, the Portland Pigs.

With the help and support of the men's club, the M.I.T. Women's RFC was formed in 1976. The team included several players from the nearby Wellesley College. The Wellesley College players split off in 1988 to form their own club which was coached by M.I.T. RFC men's players until recently. According to some calculations, the M.I.T. RFC has helped develop over one thousand players since its reincarnation in 1949.

During the mid-1950's, M.I.T. RFC was considered to be the unofficial national champion; the club's spring tour of the Eastern seaboard was the yardstick by which the development of American Rugby was measured.  Since then, the club has toured many foreign lands, the first being Bermuda in 1951. As one alumnus wrote,

"We went to Bermuda as a team for the spring vacation rugby festival in 1951 and it was a ball. Wealthy families had taken their daughters to Bermuda for Easter vacation but not their sons, and the girls complained bitterly. The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce hit on the terrific idea of having a series of rugby matches during that week, thereby providing something to watch and men for the cocktail parties the young ladies loved to have. I believe they are providing us a place to stay and free breakfast and it was up to us to piece together lunch and dinner at the social events" [ed. note, Albert D. Wheelon, the writer, was a senior vice-president at Lockheed Missile and Space Company in 1992]

Our biannual touring tradition was reestablished with the 1984 tour of England. That tour was followed with tours of England and Wales (In 1986), France (1988), Japan (1990) and Scotland (1992). After skipping 1994 as a rebuilding year, we prepare ourselves to revisit England and Wales for our "Ten Year Reunion". To complement our touring ways, the club yearly hosts foreign tours. In the last couple of years, we have hosted Hatfield Polytechnic (England), University of Western Ontario (Canada) and Glasgow University (Scotland).

The club has won almost every piece of silverware available on the East Coast, including the college division of the country's largest sevens tournament (Rockaway, 1989). The M.I.T. RFC is the only college side ever to win the NERFU Championship (1974). M.I.T. RFC was the first winner of the prestigious New York Sevens Tournament in 1958 (The M.I.T. Women's RFC won their bracket in 1979). M.I.T. won the Tech School Tournament the three years it was run (1984-1986). In the Spring of 1993, M.I.T. came out with big wins against Columbia and the Uniformed Services Medical School to win the E.R.U. Graduate School Championships. Most recently, the M.I.T. RFC Summer Seven's Team won the boot division at the Beacon Hill's Sevens Tournament in 1995.

As a leader in American rugby, M.I.T. RFC understands the importance of the social aspects of the game (particularly when hosting or traveling on tour). Even in the years when the club's record on the pitch slips, the pride is maintained with a social tradition that asserts; "If we lose the match, make damn sure that we win the party!". Usually known as one of the most versed singing teams in the area, the club has received national press for their sound rugby traditions. As an article in Rugby Magazine commented:

"Due to many academic commitments and other obligations, M.I.T. showed up at 4 a.m. and slept on the pitch. They started slowly, but showed their true rugby spirit, finishing strong... Despite losing a close match to P.C.O.M. (Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine), they proceeded to show their hosts their true partying technique."

M.I.T. RFC has always eagerly supported campus activities which introduce new players to the game of rugby. Presently, the team fields two fifteen-man sides, and sponsors a Physical Education class and a biannual intramural sevens tournament. By offering everyone interested a chance to play the greatest game in the world, the M.I.T. RFC has continued to replenish its strong base of enthusiastic players.
